Hot and Cold Weather

In colder weather situations this is how we deal with any severe weather conditions, especially snow, which may affect the
school. We recognise and appreciate the effort that staff put in to try to keep our schools open during severe
weather conditions and the effort that parents/carers put in to try to get their children into school. At all
times the Head Teacher will always keep the safety of our children, staff and parents as a priority.
Here is a reminder about how we deal with any severe weather, especially snow, which may affect our
schools during the winter months.
Each day of any severe weather the Head Teacher will make an assessment about whether it is safe and practical to open
the schools to pupils. This decision will be made as early as possible in the morning. The decision will be
based upon a number of factors including:
• The conditions of the roads in and around our schools
• Accessibility to the school sites
• The ability for parents and pupils to safely make the journey to school
• The number of school staff that can safely make the journey to school
• The ability of the emergency services to safely make the journey to school should the need arise
If the schools are closed due to severe weather:
• You will be informed by message from school – text and email. This message will arrive as early as
practicable so that parents can make alternative arrangements for the day if necessary. (Please remember
that if snow begins to fall around the commuting time in the morning, it is often difficult for staff to assess
conditions and make decisions while travelling to school. If you have not received a message from school,
please assume it is still open).
• It will be reported on our school websites and the council website, www.kirklees.gov.uk/schoolclosures
• You can check on weather and gritting updates at www.kirklees.gov.uk/winter or follow them at

In warmer weather we would ask that you ensure you send your child in appropriate
clothing fit for the weather. This should include a named hat for the sunnier weather. In line with advice from
Kirklees Guidance and Sun safe schools we are trying to take a sensible approach to the application of sun cream. As
a school we know you will understand the pressures of time and staffing when it comes to applying sun cream and
we want to ensure that we are all doing our best to keep the children protected. Parents should make sure that they
apply once a day sun cream prior to the children coming into school each morning. On hot days, if needed sun cream
will be reapplied at lunchtimes and children will be encouraged to spend time in the shade where it is available.
Parents can help school by encouraging children to practise applying their own sun cream at home. Children will be
reminded and supervised to ensure that they are protected during the school hours. In school, we have Boots Soltan
Kids 50+ UVA sun cream. If you DID NOT give permission for your child to use this brand of sun cream in the
paperwork sent out at the start of the year or your child cannot use it for medical reasons, please ensure that you
send in a named bottle of sun cream for your child as soon as possible. If you feel that your child is more sensitive to
the sun and may need more frequent applications of sun cream then it is the parent’s responsibility to supply this for
school. We can keep the sun cream accessible for re applications during the day when the weather is hot.
